Brain: Is it the Cause or the House of Consciousness?

Srinivasa Rao*

Abstract:

There is a very powerfully argued theory called the "Mind-Brain Identity Theory" according to which mental states are nothing but brain states since the former are caused by the latter. This reductionist thesis concerning consciousness will be critically examined in the paper and it is rejected in favour of a new theory that the brains simply serves as a mechanism through which consciousness reveals itself like a television set which only reveals or manifests the electromagnetic waves that are already present, and is not their producer or cause.

Key-Words:

Mind-Brain Identity Theory; Brain States; Consciousness
